is a space for Queer+ classical music.
ClassicalQueer is a space for Queer+ classical musicians to tell their stories in their own words. It is a living record and archive of the artists, instrumentalists, performers, administrators, composers, writers, and conductors who—because of, rather than in spite of our global networks, diversities, and shared adversities—have something unique to say.
In truth, this project began selfishly. I desperately wanted to read about classical musicians working in our predominantly cis-gendered, white, and heterosexist world who are anything but those things. I wanted to read about Queer+ soloists, Queer+ ensemble members, and Queer+ composers. I wanted to read about Queer+ administrators who inspire a will to change the shape of classical music through their organizations. I wanted to open Spotify and hear the playful, hypnotic, and phantasmagorical music of Jared Miller. I wanted to read about conductors like Dr. Charles Beale, artistic director of the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus, or Dr. Jace Kaholokula Saplan who queer repertoire and performance from the podium and classroom. I wanted to hear about gender non-conforming and trans people building metaphorical castles in the sky above our concert halls, ticket sales, and cookie-cutter concert-programs. I wanted to read about QTBIPOC performers like Maeve Espy Feinberg and Sara Davis Buechner who have pushed their way into a system that was stacked against them and who have unique things to say about the state of classical music.
ClassicalQueer may have began somewhat selfishly, but in talking with people—friends of the project—and hearing about their lives and careers has taught me otherwise; This project is about and for them. This far-reaching project has allowed me to commune with artists from across the world in an ever-growing network that continues to inspire joy, laughter, tears, and critical conversation.
Please read, listen, and engage with their work. Consider sharing what you read and hear with your family, friends, and colleagues.
With love,
Jacob Edward Caines
