Coming up soon: The Queer Urban Orchestra of NYC & Julie Desbordes
Coming up next is a great chat that I had with Julie Desbordes, the conductor of the Queer Urban Orchestra in New York City. She is a straight woman who is a fierce advocate for LGBT+ rights. QUO is an orchestra dedicated to serving the Queer+ community and allowing a space for its performers to find their identity through orchestral music. As an organization they are one of the worlds only LGBT+ specific orchestras (with counterparts in only a handful of other cities) and they are forging a path through the often conservative and tradition-based world of orchestral music.
Julie had some fantastic insights into the work being done by women on the podium, queer performers, and choosing repertoire. In addition to working with the QUO, she works with the Chelsea Symphony, is an active clinician across Europe, North America, and Asia, and is completing a doctorate in conducting with the most visible lesbian conductor in the world, Marin Alsop.
Look for our chat in the coming days!
